Sharp Woman: Milla Jovovich

The comely Ukrainian action star returns this week in ‘A Perfect Getaway’, and she’s got lot of ass to kick.

Although she isn’t kicking the ass of futuristic demons, vampires or other assorted supernatural beings — her raison d’être in the Resident Evil trilogy and Ultraviolet — in her latest film, A Perfect Getaway, the Kiev-born model/actress Milla Jovovich is once again smack dab in the middle of a whole lot of fighting and running for her life (however, this time around, her archenemies are human and she’s stuck in an island paradise).

“I know, for the last few years I’ve done one action film after another, but it’s kind of like the first time I’ve done consecutive action films,” reasons Jovovich about of her penchant for non-stop cinematic roller coaster rides. “Usually it’s like I’ll do an action film, some independent movies, and then another action film. I try to mix it up. It’s just the last couple years it just worked out that way. It’s just hard. Independents, you can do so many of them and you never know what’s going to come out and what’s not going to come out, so it’s screwed up. I’ve done quite a lot of movies that just haven’t seen the light of day, either. When I do the action films, at least I know people will see them. And, I like doing them I really do. But, actually, later this year, I’m doing a period piece (Winter Queen) where I play an upper class woman from the second empire. So, that’s going to be something different for me. She’s wears corsets and period gowns, so she won’t be kicking anybody’s butt — for a change.”

In A Perfect Getaway, much like she did in her previously abovementioned action flicks, she performed her own (often dangerous) stunts.

“Most of the time when I’m on the set while they are filming the action sequences, I do my own stunts because I love doing them — unless the insurance company won’t cover it,” she says with a wide, canary-eating grin. “I like to make them as realistic as possible because then I don’t have to act so much. I can just react and just be natural because if you have to do something like jump off a building, if you jump down that hard, all you can do is go, ‘Ugh’ or whatever. You don’t have to kind of try so hard, so I like to keep it real.”

Of course, Jovovich is required to get herself in tip-top shape to withstand the physical wear and tear that each film’s stunts take on her body. These days, she’s become a devoted student of martial arts (which she studied for Resident Evil 3). According to Milla, learning the finer points of martial arts has imbued her with personal confidence and has put her in touch with her own physique.

“I think it’s so important to have a physical and sort of psychological kind of balance in your life,” she confesses. “So I find that anytime I’m depressed or anytime I don’t feel good, as soon as I go and train or something, it’s fine. You really get that endorphin rush going. It’s really healthful, makes you feel really good.”
