Steam Whistle + Team Cedar Grilling = Barbecue Bliss

by Rob on June 25th, 2008

The exploding thigh

Arriving at the Steam Whistle Brewery for their Tuesday luncheon, it became quickly apparent to Sharp that it was going to be a great afternoon. There was a beautiful blue sky above our heads, a fully stocked bar and Team Cedar Grilling, the 2006 and 2007 Canadian BBQ Open Champions, were manning the grill.

Sharp got some beers (naturally) then moved on over to where the Cedar Grilling guys were cooking. Two of the Team, Stephen Adams and Daryl Maybanks, were as gracious as they are skilled, showing off their Crown Verity BBQ collection and telling us how they worked their BBQ magic: cooking and steaming their creations for 18 hours or more, and constantly finding the best possible products with which to barbecue.

But talk is just talk. In order to fully appreciate their genius we had to get a taste f ourselves. First on the menu was a bacon-wrapped, cream-cheese stuffed, jalepeno pepper; a delicious blend of both spicy and creamy flavours to whet our appetite for the next meal: chicken thighs in an apricot sauce. Chef Adams guaranteed that it’d be the juiciest chicken we’d ever bite into and he didn’t lie: having been smoked and grilled for multiple hours, the thigh exploded with flavour.

Next up was a tasty beef brisket; then Forty Creek Whisky-infused baked beans, followed by the piece de resistance, fall-off-the bone ribs; the meat tender and benefiting from a special Steam Whistle BBQ sauce. The meal then finished with barbecued pineapple dipped in chocolate. All in all it was a tour de force for the Team Cedar Grilling Team, and by all accounts, they’ll be tough to beat at the 2008 Canadian BBQ Open in Barrie, July 4th-6th. Watch the Watchmen in four different formats

by Rob on June 24th, 2008

silkspectrefull.jpgForget Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, 2009 will be the year of the superheroes: the movie version of Alan Moore’s legendary graphic novel, Watchmen, will be released March 6th, 2009. Originally released as a comic book series from 1986 to 1987, the Watchmen revolves around Rorschach, a retired superhero who re-connects with his old super buddies in order to solve the murder of their mutual friend, Edward Blake. The complex plot then jumps time, location and universes until its thrilling conclusion.

As the only comic to win a Hugo award for best piece of science fiction or fantasy, the original is an indisputable masterpiece. As such, anticipation is high in nerd land. Should director Zack Synder’s (300) adaptation not be up to snuff, expect your keyboard to heat up: the Internet to burn with fury.

For now, filming finished in Vancouver on February 18th, 2008. The latest news is that not only will the big screen version be around three hours, there’ll also be a separately released, hour and a half DVD, Tales of the Black Freighter; that deals with a sub plot of the original comic. After that, there’ll eventually be a four and a half hour director’s cut version of the film, separately released as well. Film geeks will get their special features and Warner will make a heap: everybody wins.

Stay classy, Italy

From the pitch… to the golf course? He’s always looking Sharp.

Catastrofe! Too bad for Italy and their coach, Roberto Donadoni: Euro 2008’s best dressed coach lost his quarter final match against Spain yesterday on penalty kicks; a heartbreaker. We were in Toronto’s Little Italy for the match and afterwards you could feel the collective gloom for miles. No racing up and down College St. honking loudly for the boys; so sad.

Not only is it bad news for the Italians, it’s bad news for all of us. During the past few weeks, Roberto Donadoni has been a style icon to us all. The well cut suits, slim ties, mega-watch, well-coiffed grey hair: he was a living testament to Italian style. Yeah, the guy might be canned, but he’ll always be classy. So hang in there Don Don. You’ve got our support.
