Shark Week on Discovery Channel
by Jeremy on July 28th, 2008

Sharks are bad ass. Huge, relentless and downright-mean there is nary a predator that is as feared and respected as the Great White. Plus, they make great TV. Which is why the good folks at the Discovery Channel have pronounced July 27th - August 1 st Shark Week. Tonight, 9 p.m. ET, Survivor Man’s (and good Canadian) Les Stroud stars in Surviving Sharks, as he and marine biologist Jeremiah Sullivan travel to South Africa and the Bahamas to test popular theories on how to survive a shark attack. Is it best to splash around a shark solo? Or should you stay in groups? Stroud finds out in his (a)typical fashion. Sharp’s other pick is Dirtyjobs: Greenland Shark Quest, airing July 29th, 9 p.m. ET. Dirtyjob’s host Mike Rowe travels all the way to Greenland to find the near-mythic Greenland shark (which is also found off the shores of Canada). While there he helps scientists learn more about the undersea giants and how climate change is affecting their lives.
For more shark info and games, be sure to visit Discovery’s website. We highly suggested dabbling with the Photoshop game, Shark Yourself.

HSBC Celebration of Light in Vancouver: USA vs. Canada vs. China
by Jeremy on July 25th, 2008
HSBC’s Celebration of Light is a fireworks competition, featuring the best teams from Canada, China and USA over Vancouver’s English Bay. It runs from July 23rd to August 30th. Canada kicked off the event on Wednesday with a show centered around the idea of Vancouver defending itself from Godzilla. Massive amount of exploding lights and music sourced directly from the ‘Zilla movies were used to fully capture the experience of humanity’s finest hour. Awesome: the only thing they could’ve added were guys running around with guns and buildings ablaze. Yeah, good thing they left those out.
USA’s theme of ‘Love will Change the World’ (July 26th) seems tame in comparison. But fret not, manly men, there’s some Van Halen and The Who in their set list. China then presents the fireworks equivalent of an ode to the Olympics on July 30th. The finale, featuring all three teams, takes place on August 2nd. All shows starting at 10pm.

Sports Week in Toronto: Golf, Tennis, and Soccer, Oh My!
by Rob on July 24th, 2008
On August 8th it’ll be Beijing’s time to shine, but for now, Toronto rules the sports scene: tonight Major League Soccer hosts an all-star match between the best of the league versus West Ham United at BMO Field; the Rogers Cup has the tennis elite (sans Roger Federer, sorry buddy!) all week; and the RBC Canadian Open is in Oakville until the 27th. You can’t walk a block in this town without hitting a sports supestar.
So get out there and go see some action.
