Toronto Artist Dave Dyment: Glenfiddich As Art

Toronto artist Dave Dyment was an artist in residence at the Glenfiddich Distillery. And he drank mojitos.

But the audio/video/performance artist isn’t above Scotland’s national drink. Indeed, he made it into art.

The Glenfiddich Distillery in northern Scotland hosts eight artists in residency a year. When chosen as one of the lucky eight, Dyment originally conceived an audio installation piece. But while there he became increasingly interested in the complicated legal rules governing how Scotch is made: to be called Scotch, it must come from Scotland, aged over three years, etc. So he decided to try a hand at making a batch of his own.

Consulting with Glenfiddich’s Master Distiller Ian Millar, he created a 100-year old Scotch. Housed in a wooden box, the planned output will be 50 bottles. After purchase, art collectors and whisky connoisseurs can then claim their brew when it reaches its maturation in 2108. Called A Drink To Us (When We’re Both Dead), Dyment says it’s a “piece about trust, history, investment, inheritance and patience.”
