![The Camp4 Winter Driving School comes to Quebec for another season of sideways fun, this time with the all-new 2012 Porsche 911. Also, don't miss our video of last year's action. By Sharp Staff
Promotion

The Mecaglisse test track, located in the foothills of Canada’s famous Mont Tremblant, is a winter wonderland built of ice and horsepower. It is the stuff of automotive myth; a picturesque ice racetrack and the perfect setting in which to host Porsche’s Camp4 Canada driving school.

“More sideways! More power!” crackles the voice of Porsche Sport Driving School instructor J-P Clinging over the radio. I’d never driven on ice before, and neither had most other attendees. But, here goes nothing. With jab of throttle, the revs flare as not even the studded tires can keep traction on the ice. The rear end swings around. I ease off the gas ever so slightly, countersteering like mad and for a brief, perfect second, the mid-engined Cayman S is balanced just over the limit of grip in a textbook drift. Or, at least it was, until the steering runs out of lock and the car does a neat pirouette, coming to a dead stop inches away from a three-foot high wall of snow. “Good! Now you’re getting it!” says Clinging. “Again.” I attended the school last winter, but the memories are still as fresh as the driven snow.

See, Camp4 Canada is not like any other driving school – except, of course, for its progenitor: Porsche Camp4 Finland. The point here is to have fun in Stuttgart’s sports cars in a safe winter setting while learning the finer points of car control on ice and snow.

Now in its second year, Camp4 Canada is expanding. There are just 90 spots for participants this season, but those lucky few will be able to drive the all-new 2012 Porsche 911, as well as the Cayman and the four-wheel-drive 911 Carrera C4S. In fact, drivers on the first wave of the program—taking place from January 31st to February 3rd—will be the first in Canada to experience the new 911, the latest flagship sports car from Stuttgart, during two full days of high-performance ice driving.

The program also includes three nights accommodation and off-track meals at the luxurious Estérel, Suites Spa & Lake, located in the Mont Tremblant region. Customized corporate programs are also an option, so start dropping hints to your boss.

This year, for the first time, Camp4 S is coming to Canada. The advanced school features higher speeds and more challenging exercises, as well as a chance to test your metal on the full Mecaglisse circuit. But the program is only open to drivers who have completed Camp4 or another Porsche Sport Driving School.

Our last day at Mecaglisse ends with the sun heading down behind the mountains. By the time the group has figured out the Scandinavian Flick—a pendulum turn which has drivers turning the opposite direction to a corner, before swinging around almost on the spot and drifting effortlessly through a bend—it’s time to leave the ice.

Nowhere else on the continent can you drive some of the world’s best sports cars on a dedicated ice track. Porsche’s Camp4 Canada feels like a once-in-a-lifetime experience, until you realize you could go back year after year. And, we hear Porsche Canada has even more ambitious plans in the works for the 2012/13 season. Till, then safe driving.
