James Dean stands watch over a gas station in California’s central valley. Here, two stories tall, paint faded, frozen in that famous pose from Rebel Without a Cause, finger pointing towards the Texaco, Dean is forever young. Although, actually, if you look closely he’s beginning to show some cracks. He rises up out of the perfectly flat landscape, a beacon for truckers and travelers. For miles there’s nothing else around. Highway 46 is dead straight. This is Blackwell’s Corner, roughly halfway between Paso Robles in the west and Bakersfield in the east. Nearly 150 miles north of Tinseltown it’s an unlikely spot to find a looming Hollywood icon, but this gas station holds an unusual claim to Dean’s legacy: it was the last place he was seen alive.

With a new Corvette leading the charge, the big fast American car is making a comeback. (Or is it a last hurrah?)

It’s not all gun debates and youth unemployment. There are some beacons of hope in America. They may be small, but they burn bright.

In Detriot, on a makeshift stage in a semi-abandonned warehouse as big as several city blocks, the 2014 Corvette Stingray emerged from darkness, backlit by a blinding light. This searing red silhouette of an american legend, reborn.

For a few moments, everyone who saw it forgot about hybrids and subcompacts and remembered that the USA used to be really, really good at building fast cars with big engines. And you know what? It’s been a while, but they haven’t lost their touch.

And five other cars with over 500 horsepower.

Today (this morning, in fact) Porsche unveiled its newest flagship: Yes, the 911 Turbo is back, 40 years after its initial debut. To the untrained eye, it may look roughly the same as any 911, but we know different. We know it’s the quintessential gentleman’s supercar. But, if that doesn’t sound like your cuppa, then we’ve rounded up a few other +500 horsepower machines that might be more your speed.

Jaguar has released a short film starring Homeland actor Damian Lewis called Desire to show off its new F-TYPE in a new and creative way. True to the luxury brand’s roots, the 13-minute film bears no shortage of adrenaline and packs a stylish punch with Lewis playing a dapper delivery driver for high-end cars. Produced in association with Ridley Scott Associates, the flick also stars actress Shannyn Sossamon and was directed by Adam Smith, to which he describes the project as “a real adventure; a story of betrayal, retribution, passion and greed.”

What do you get when you pair one of the leading automobile manufacturers in the world with an iconic art festival? An eye-popping display of creativity and luxe, of course.

Fast and furious, colourful and seductive- these are the descriptive elements BMW and Paris Photo have in mind when choosing the most appropriate pieces of work to showcase at the inaugural fair being held at L.A’s Paramount Pictures Studios, marking the ten-year partnership between the two companies. Chosen as one of the main attractions, spectators will be able to enjoy the M1 BMW Art Car famously painted by Andy Warhol in 1979. The additions of bright, bold splotches of colour depict the idea of speed, and according to Warhol, are indicative of an accelerating vehicle.

Since 1975, other notable artists have been contributing their work to The Art Car Collection, including David Hockney, Frank Stella and Jeff Koons. Each car represents the art, design and technology of the year it was created and have been housed in several museums such as the Guggenheim and the Louvre, to name a few.

BMW will also pay homage to old Hollywood with a photo gallery done in scintillating burlesque form, complete with gorgeous women posing with an equally stunning 650i Gran Coupe, an idea that originally came to BMW almost two years ago during a visit to a private movie set in Hollywood.
