James Cameron, We Salute You

Here, Jim Cameron prepares to take his specially designed solo submersible (which he helped to design) to the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean's Mariana Trench (which is roughly 6.8 miles down) at a site referred to as "Challenger Deep."<br>
<br>Fact: Not only is Cameron the only individual to complete the dive in a solo submersible vehicle, he's also the first person since the early '60s to reach the bottom of the world in a manned submersible.

<br>Fact: Cameron spent something like three hours down there.

Cameron does what any man 35,755 feet below the surface of the ocean would do—he drops the world's deepest tweet: "Just arrived at the ocean's deepest pt. Hitting bottom never felt so good. Can't wait to share what I'm seeing w/ you @DeepChallenge" (We're still trying to figure out how the hell that's even possible.)

<br>Fact: What exactly did Cameron see when he hit the bottom? Not much, sadly. Unless you count amphipods. According to National Geographic's <a href="http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2012/03/120326-james-cameron-mariana-trench-challenger-deepest-lunar-sub-science/">website</a>, "...due to a hydraulics leak and a host of lost thrusters, Cameron wasn't able to capture any biological samples, and an attempted sediment core sample was only partially retrieved." According to Cameron, "The only free swimmers I saw were amphipods." Or, in plain English, shrimp-like bottom feeders commonly found in these types of marine environments.
