A brilliant show of understated acting; his quiet wheelman—clad in a satin jacket, constantly fiddling with a toothpick—reminded us of McQueen. Gosling is stylish without being soft, an attractor of attention without having to beg for it. He can be called cute one moment, while gashing a man's stomach open the next. It's an admirable balance that all men should strive for. It became clear, as Gosling navigated the sprawl of Los Angeles by night, that his rise was in the rear view and his prime had just begun.$
