Proud to see Maritime excellence in Propeller repped, but man, Garrison is just as good. Ditto Pumphouse in Moncton. I wish OK Springs would release the Black Lager to Atlantic Canada – the Pale Ale is amazing.

    Just one correction –
Kokanee, Canadian, and Alexander Keith’s are, in fact, terrible beers.

I gotta say this is a pretty cursory sampling of some of Canada’s craft brewers (GIB, arguably doesn’t event qualify). How about BC’s Driftwood Brewery? Everything that comes out of there is gold. Howe Sound? Central City? Manitoba’s “Half Pints” – not even mentioned? These are easily the finest micro brews in the country. You nailed Propeller though – the East Coast’s finest indeed but that’s easy.

Half-Pints in MB is totally bitchen indeed.

Unibroue, OK Springs, Granville are all Macro-Owned/Distributed. And completely agree, the ‘beers’ everyone has ‘surely’ heard of are not so great at all. The idea of most micro-brews is to service a neighborhood, town, county, region…and not necessarily to be national. Breweries should be measured by quality of beer, independence, uniqueness…not distribution and brand power.

Congrats to the breweries listed…and congrats to the whole industry for truly stepping up their game over the past 10 years.

Wow, quite a few missing from this list. Nice to see VIB but leaving off Phillips, Tree Brewing, Red Racer is a shame. Having GIB on this list which was sold to Molson/Coors in 2009 just shows bad research.

I’m upset to see Flying Monkeys missing from the list… but oh well :-D Still a pretty damn good list!

  • Andrew Grant

This is a fairly ‘barely-scratches-the-surface’ kind of list that ignores many regional (yet lesser known) craft breweries with more unique brews, don’t you think? And many of these may arguably not even be able to be classified as micro-breweries any more. It seems you’ve sacrificed flavour and character for something people might have seen already. A LOT more research needs to be done – but then, I guess that’s the best part of an exercise such as this…

  • Elias

Would have liked to have seen Paddockwood from Saskatoon make this list!

  • John

Granville Island is no microbrew. They were bought by Molson over two years ago.

    This is a horrible post…….

Only 2 more weeks till the Great Canadian Beer Fest in Victoria where there will be a PROPER selection of amazing Canadian Microbrews! Maybe you should check it out and do some research….. or just go back to your latte.

Missing: Beau’s, St Ambroise (McAuslan), & Bierbrier

All of these beers have one thing in common: No Taste. I guess this is a Men’s mag, and I have yet to try the white IPA from VI brews, but steamwhistle? You might as well hand me a kokanee. Granville IS owned by molson and is ok, but… Okanagan Springs only has one good beer, and it’s a LAGER. I guess we just like different things in a beer. I would say, instead of going back to your latte, go back to your sprite :P . (Apologies, but you must have expected this when trying to name ‘best of’. Especially something as artful as micro brews). Pfft.

The address given for Granville Island is the Tasting site where small batches are made. These are quality brews. The ones named by you are made at the MOLSON plant in Vancouver. So how are they micro beers? As Half Pints is not named I get the feeling something is strangely wrong with the survey. Who did it? Are they beer judges? Are you getting a kick back from Molson/Sleeman’s? Sleeman’s owns Okanagan Springs and Unibroue.

  • gerry stafford

    more like pretty bottle list

  • law4

I want to try Sleemens, like Grandville Island Beer, want to try the new wide mouth bottels other than that I do not drink much

  • DerFinzi

whoever put that list together has obviously no idea of microbreweries in Canada

  • Justin Champagne-Lagarde

Gotta say; I’ve read a couple of your “canada’s best” lists and so far they’ve been alright. This list is terrible, basically a list of canada’s worst microbrews! Some of which are owned by the big mass produced breweries…
How about Dieu de Ciel, Half Pints, Driftwood, Storm, A l’abri de la tempete, so many great breweries missed and so many on the list that shouldn’t be.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Andrew.JW.Moore Andrew Moore

What about Flying Monkeys? Muskoka? Great Lakes Brewing? I mean seriously this list omits some of the best Craft Breweries that this country has to offer, yet leaves in C grade breweries such as Steam Whistle, and Mill St.

  • Rory

Although some of these make some pretty good stuff, this is nowhere near the best in Canada.

  • Chris.

    Ummm Bellwoods!
