Abraham Perrelet made his mark many years ago as the man who invented the automatic watch. This time-saving time piece meant that precious minutes weren’t frittered away in what must have been an existence spent perpetually winding. The company that still bears his name has continued his quest to deliver luxury watches, and has potentially reinvented the wheel with their new “Double Rotor” series. It might not be the earth shattering innovation that self-winding was in 1770s, but the “Double Rotor” is not necessarily just a gimmick, either. Typically, watches have one rotor on the front, but here you get one on either side. With an open-backed case and two rotors you get to see more of the clockwork, and though this is largely superfluous, the gimmick adds a certain sleekness by putting the engineering on display.Aside from looking cool, the double rotor design, pioneered by Perrelet, apparently increases precision and is fast becoming an industry standard for top of the line watchmakers.Perrelet Double Rotor Watches, starting at $4725 perrelet.com
