![It took a man from Japan to get a traditional North American moccasin right. By William Stodalka

Clop-clop. Thump-thump. Squeak-squeak. When you walk, you make noises. And in the forest, it’s more like crunch-crunch. And this can disturb the serene silence, and violate the high cathedral of the forest canopy, not to mention startle the doe you’re stalking. You don’t want that; you want to be silent.

That’s why we like the Yuketen moccasin boots from Japanese designer Yuki Matsuda. They’re designed for that kind of profound silence. And, of course, high fashionability. The line started when Matsuda left his home country of Japan to study with California leather artisans. In 1989, he founded Yukuten, which has since become mostly known for its take on classic American shoes. In these boots, he’s produced a unique version of the classic mocassin, which was originally created so that hunters could be silent when they’re stalking their prey in the forest.

Matsuda takes his inspiration from the style of the original Native American hunters. These shoes wrap around your feet, just like those shoes, and the soles are similarly hand-sewn, done with the care and attention you’d expect from people trying to take down a big game animal. Unfortunately for all our Eastern readers, they won’t be available over there. Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver will be getting them at Holt Renfrew, so if you’re from there, you can be on the hunt for them this October.

Available at Holt Renfrew. ‘Brown shoes’, $495. ”Brown with Plaid Wool Crazy’, ($625), ‘Black with Black Herringbone’, ($525).
