Watch: Will Ferrell’s Sneaky, Smart Old Milwaukee Super Bowl Ad
Possibly the funniest, most intelligent Super Bowl ad ever made. By Sharp StaffWhile brands like Budweiser shelled out the big bucks for nationally televised Super Bowl spots this past Sunday, their brewing competitor Old Milwaukee showed some creativity in getting their message out, for cheap. Old Mil’s ad did feature a celebrity cameo (Will Ferrell, who did it for free) but instead of dumping out the millions to show their ad around the country, the Pabst-owned brand decided to pay a much smaller fee of around $1,500 to air their commercial exclusively in North Platte, Nebraska, otherwise known as the hometown of New England Patriots running back Danny Woodhead and the second smallest television market in the United States. Was this some kind of test run or a tribute to the diminutive Pat? No, actually, as detailed here by Business Weekly, it was a tricky play of viral marketing. Instead of falling in with the rest of the high-spending ad crowd, Old Milwaukee made a bet that the exclusivity of their spot (and the undeniable popularity of Ferrell) would pay off in the long run in the form of internet views and buzz. So far the plan has worked as the short, albeit hilarious commercial has generated more conversation over Twitter than any other Super Bowl advertisement before it.
