![The duo behind Montreal's WANT Les Essentiels de La Vie talk new endeavours and perfect luggage. By Alex Korchynski

In the quest to have the latest and greatest wardrobe essentials, many men lose focus of what’s important: purpose. Byron and Dexter Peart, the brother design team at WANT Les Essentiels de La Vie, focus on that which most men neglect. Their line of luxury bags and accessories is as much about form and function as it is about aesthetics. And with a newly opened storefront in Toronto’s Billy Bishop airport, the twins, along with their partners Mark Wiltzer and Jacqueline Gelber, longtime industry veterans, have taken into account every travel need that a man may have, from passport holders to a weekenders.

WANT Les Essentiels de La Vie is a brand known for quality; their aim is to produce classic items that will never go out of style and last a lifetime. As such, the pieces designed by the Pearts feature clean lines and only the finest of materials. Influenced by architects of the Bauhaus and American Mid-Century movements, the Pearts design their products with the same consideration and thought as the greats did in their time, like Mies van der Rohe and the Eameses.

In the busy, bustling world of fast fashion, trendy, low-quality goods are the norm when it comes to purchasing patterns; items that may only last a season in terms of quality and style. Instead, the guys behind WANT have opted to pursue fashion in the opposite direction by providing those products that will always look great anytime, anywhere. The Pearts know that their customer is the refined sort of gentleman that refuses to settle for less than the best – why should he have to? Their customer is the type of individual that tailors his suits, dimples his ties and elevates his look with the perfect set of accessories. Men allocate time and money for their clothes and shoes, but often neglect their travel gear. Too many times has a beautiful suit been ruined within the confines of a nylon messenger bag. Having noticed this, the brothers decided to expand into high-quality travel accessories that take a man from one destination to another in effortless style.

It is the concept of high-quality and sweet simplicity, seen in their products, that the Pearts have extended into the design of their shops. First, the WANT Apothecary was opened in Montreal, modeled after a 19th century pharmacy, featuring the WANT Les Essentiels de La Vie line alongside other luxury goods. The duo, along with their partners, have opened their unique and practical concept store, WANT Passport, within Toronto’s Billy Bishop Airport, stocked full of everything a jet-setter needs. There, customers can choose from a carefully curated selection of travel items from the brand, as well as a few others outside of the Canadian company. Located at the airport’s arrivals gate, anything and everything one might need while traveling was considered during the planning of the shop. An array of bags for traveling is available, of course, but there are other necessities you might overlook as well: iPhone chargers, gym shoes, gifts for your wife, and more.

And with the attention to detail paid by the Pearts in WANT Passport’s conception, customers’ experiences will be far from the misery associated with airport terminals. It is the brother’s aim to integrate their brand into the everyday lives of their customers. While shopping, one might purchase a fine, leather passport holder. Noticing the fine quality of the product, he might also be inclined to pick up another item from the WANT Les Essentiels de La Vie line in the future. The Pearts want their collection to become just that: a collection. They want their customers to accumulate their leather goods like the leather treasures that they are.

WANT Passport’s other items were selected based on their craftsmanship and quality; the Pearts want to make sure that they’re consciously offering only the best to their customers and catering to their every need. Travel bags are one thing, but a passerby through the airport might need a magazine for his flight, a pair of sunglasses for when he reaches his destination, or even a glass for his kitchen at home. Covering all bases, Byron and Dexter have carefully chosen a selection of magazines for their Traveler’s Newsstand, foldable shades to throw in your bag from Ray-Ban and Persol, and a glass that won’t fall over, designed for the FinnAir business class flights in the 1960s by a brand called Iittala. It is through this careful curation of products that the brothers hope to satisfy every pressing need for the man on the go. You need a pack of gum, fine, grab it at any airport mart in the world. But a Leica camera? Or a luxurious leather dopp kit? You’re only going to find those at WANT Passport.
