![A closer look at the beauty behind this masterpiece. By Carol Besler

Bandiera Jewellers on Yorkville Avenue hosted a reception followed by a dinner at One, in the Hazelton Hotel, this week to herald the arrival of an horological masterpiece from Zenith Watch.

The timepiece, the Academy Christophe Colomb Equation of Time, takes complicated watches to the next level. First, it’s an Equation of Time, which means it tells the difference between solar and mean time. True solar time varies up to 20 minutes from day to day because of the earth’s elliptical orbit. Mean time, given by watches, averages these variations into equal hours. The equation of time hand indicates the daily difference.

Secondly, it’s the ultimate gravity defying timepiece. It contains a mechanism that represents the evolution of the tourbillon, which was invented in 1801 to compensate for the effects of gravity on the accuracy of a pocket watch, which sat in the upright position. The Christophe Colomb, with its unique gyroscopic system, doesn’t compensate for the effects of gravity, it avoids the effects of gravity altogether. The concept is inspired by the “Cardan suspension system,” a type of universal joint in a shaft that enables it to rotate when out of alignment. It was used to keep navigational marine chronometers upright while ships pitched and rolled in the days of Christopher Columbus (hence the name). Keeping the regulating organ in a horizontal position generates the best possible amplitude of the movement, and thus considerably enhances timing precision. Five years in development, this new movement has 166 components, compared to the tourbillon, with approximately 66.
