How to: Get a Manicure
Being busy guys, we often find ourselves forgetting the small, finer things in life. Sometimes what we need is a little bit of pampering—a foot rub, a back massage, maybe even a good old manicure. Yes, we said manicure.
Feminine it may seem, but luxurious and nurturing it most assuredly is. Nothing makes a man look cleaner and smarter than a nice set of claws. So don’t be afraid to get those boys straightened out. You never know whose hand you’ll be shaking next.
Rough, uneven, crusty fingernails project laziness and poor hygiene—not a first impression (or second, or third, or fourth) you want to be making. Get your nails cleaned and shaped, and keep them that way. You’ll command more respect and, equally important, the ladies will love it. Not only will you have a softer touch, you’ll look cleaner overall.
Once you get past the initial “but manicures are for girls” hurdle, you’ll quickly realize that a nail job is a great way to relax. You’ll get some time to de-stress and relax—because it’s hard to manoeuvre a smart phone while your fingers are being massaged. And if you’re worried that your only company will be of the opposite sex (hey, sometimes it’s a blessing, sometimes it’s a curse), grab a few buddies and check out a men-only salon. These souped-up barbershops have a casual, club vibe so there’s no need to feel uncomfortable and out of place—and they’re popping up everywhere, so it shouldn’t be hard to find one. Hell, you can even have a beer or two and watch the game while you get clipped. Doesn’t sound half bad, does it?
As with all things, maintenance is key, so pick up a do-it-yourself kit to maintain the manicured look at home—it’s like a set of tools, only for fixing your hands. We recommend the Royce Men’s Leather Manicure Set ($30) for essential tools or, if you’re feeling particularly daring, the Alice 8-piece Manicure/Pedicure Kit ($50). A pair of nail clippers simply won’t do—we can guarantee that you’re not coordinated enough to properly shape your nails and clean your cuticles. Uneven, crooked fingernails are not only unsightly, but also look completely amateur. Why not go for an even edge every time? SA
