How to: Pack

Tip # 7

Whether you’re headed out for a romantic weekend in the country, or a few weeks working overseas, there are a number of rules to keep in mind when it comes to packing up your suitcases.

Don’t be stingy with your neutrals. Whites, blacks and grays are never a bad thing, and are ideal for mixing and matching. Important: bring enough socks and underwear (and a few extra of each, just in case your trip is prolonged). And make sure you’ve got layers.

For a trip of a weekend to a week…

Business or pleasure, we suggest packing one neutral suit, one pair of jeans, one pair of khakis or chinos, a few button-down shirts and V-neck sweaters for layering, a pair of oxfords (never more than two pairs of shoes) and a tie or two.

If you’re headed overseas…

You need to take note of the weather. Bring clothes that are ideal for layering—for example, V-neck tees and sweaters—and a selection of jeans and khakis.

An overnight trip…

This should be a no-brainer: one suit, a pair of jeans, a button-down and a t-shirt, and you’re good to go.
