Sharp Woman: Jody Thompson
THRILL in the awe-inspiring TERROR! as Canadian actress Jody Thompson talks about her SHOCKING sci-fi homage Alien Trespass. ...

![The Ivy League grad shares her thoughts on Bon Jovi, organic farming and tweeting @The Dalai Lama. By Sharp Staff
Scottie Thompson is doing pretty well for herself. In the five odd years she’s been in show biz, the Virginia native has been quietly climbing the Hollywood ranks, landing solid roles on popular TV cop dramas like NCIS, and sci-fi blockbusters like last year’s Skyline (Ms. Thompson also showed up, albeit briefly, in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek as Nero’s dead, though hot alien wife.) We talked to Scottie about her farming roots in Virginia, her Ivy League roots at Harvard and a potential dance-off with Natalie Portman. You could skip the reading and just get lost in her blue-eyed gaze, but then you wouldn’t really be her type.

How did you spend your Thanksgiving?

I went back home to Virginia to see my family. I pressed some apple cider with a cider press from 1905, which was pretty fun. My little brother is an organic farmer so we ate one of his turkeys.

How are your farming skills?

They’re not too high on the ladder. I’m growing vegetables in my backyard in L.A., but I’m just learning. I rode horses when I was a kid. I did grow up on a farm but I was never too involved with the goings-on.

You went to Harvard and majored in literature. What’s your favourite book?

Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. He’s an incredible author, I just got his latest book. I’m kind of obsessed.

You’re an accomplished ballet dancer. Who would win in a ballet dance-off between you and Natalie Portman?

I would kick her butt.

Was she believable as a dancer?

I thought so, but then all that stuff came out about how it was mostly her stunt double and not really Natalie. I thought in terms of the artistic expression she was really good and from what I could tell, the way it was shot, she looked really decent. It is definitely a life-long thing that unless you’ve trained in gymnastics, to do the stuff that that role requires, it would be hard to learn it all in a year.

Would you like to do a ballet movie?

Yeah, for sure. It would be an awesome challenge to re-attune my body to dance and to put my point shoes back on after too long. I had an audition a few years ago for a ballet piece, so I had to pull out my old point shoes and call up a friend I used to dance with and we re-taught ourselves. It was pretty exciting.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve had to do for an audition?

I don’t have any horror stories. I haven’t been asked to take off my shirt or anything. There was one audition where I did the first part of the audition, which was a rehearsal, and then right before we were supposed to go in for the real thing the casting director said, “I’m sorry Scottie, I have to ask you to leave.” I had a heart-stopping moment where I wondered ‘was I actually that bad?’ It turned out that my agent had not been able to come to an agreement contractually. That was a relief.

Having graduated from Harvard, you must be the most over-qualified video girl ever.

I think there are a couple others out there. I do have a lot of people ask me ‘what are you doing?’ I actually have a lot of friends out here in L.A. pursuing acting and writing. I’m doing some writing myself now, just to balance it all out…to use my brain in other ways. I think acting is something that requires a lot of intelligence. You see the really good performances and you see people that approached the role from every angle and put some real thought into it. Actors are, in a way, social anthropologists.

How did your role in the Bon Jovi video come about?

That was so much fun to do. I’m a huge fan of Bon Jovi. I didn’t have to do too much but it was fun pretending to be a high-level celebrity. It was great meeting Bon Jovi, I got to hang out with him while he recorded the song. To watch him on the camera, in 3D, was pretty wild.

If you could chose any artist to act in a music video with, who would it be?

Brett Dennen and Joe Purdy are two of my favourite artists. They both have soulful lyrics and I would love to work with them. There’s also Bob Dylan. [laughs]

I think Bob just makes Christmas Records now.

Yea, because they make him a lot of money. [laughs]

Are you aware that there is a Canadian comedian also named Scott Thompson?

No, I didn’t know that! I do have a really funny story about a name mix-up from when I applied for my SAG card. They almost didn’t let me have the name Scottie Thompson because, as the woman told me that day, the artist known as “Carrot Top” is actually named Scottie Thompson. And I guess they didn’t want the confusion but I think he gets most of his checks written out to Carrot Top because I haven’t received one of his paychecks.

That might be because nobody’s sent him one since the 90s. Did you run into Mark Zuckerberg while you were at Harvard?

No, I didn’t. But I did know Eduardo [Saverin], who was in the film, and Divya [Narendra, the Winklevoss' partner]. Divya actually saved my life once. I was sitting on a railing and slipped. Behind me was a 7-foot drop to cement. Divya caught me. It’s funny because during the course of that evening he told me that he started Facebook.

I saw you re-tweeted the Lama

I love that the Dalai Lama is on twitter! I retweet everything he says because he’s the kind of person you want to be following in the crazy world we live in.

Scottie Thompson will be appearing in the upcoming TNT Christmas movie “Deck The Halls,” which airs on December 20th. She has also completed shooting for an independent film entitled “Lake Effects,” which comes out sometime this year.
